TCB 006 - Break Up With Your Expectations
It’s been a minute, but I’m excited to be back in the thick of things with you. I kind of fell off a cliff after my last update in February, but in a good way (I like to think). Life has really been lifing and I have been working on finding ways to get back in flow while also taking the time to stay centered. My time for creating has basically been non-existent since that small window in February when I was able to send my last update, but I’m back, baby. I share a bit about what I’ve been up to in the last episode of The Creative Brink podcast – so, please give it a listen if you haven’t checked it out, yet.
How are we showing up
I have been thinking a lot about the ways we show up in the world and how much social media has played into our own perceptions, in both good and bad ways. I’ll be sharing my thoughts in a more articulated manner soon, but I keep asking myself whether social media is serving my highest good and my highest self? I haven’t gotten an answer back quite yet, but I’d like to think so. Truth is, I’ve been so busy creating in tangible ways that I didn’t have time to log on and tell others about it – I just did it.
As my experiences have grown and the ways in which I seek balance expands, I’ve found myself less and less connected to the urge to share every aspect of my day with strangers. That’s not to say that I don’t love when others do it – because I do! Have you seen the lifestyle reels on TikTok? Please…. teach me your skills. I bet you’re wondering how someone who owns a content and production studio could NOT like social media? You wouldn’t be the first to ask that question and surely you won’t be the last. The truth is, I love social media I just don’t love it for me necessarily. I’ve been searching for IRL connections that authentically inspire me and encourage everyone around me, clients included, to do the same.
In January, I asked you to think about some things and promised I’d share my answers in my next newsletter – see them below:
What are the passion projects you've let fall to the side because of your relationship with perfectionism?
The easy answer: The Creative Brink newsletter & podcast. These are two of my loves that I’ve let fall to the side over the last few months because honestly, doing one more thing on top of all of the other things I had to do on a daily basis seemed like a performative action. I always want to come from a balanced place when I sit down and with all the changes over the last few months, the balance had to find its way back into my journey before I felt ready to pour back into this experience. I’m happy I took the time because I feel a lot better about where I am at now and where this thing is headed.
How can you build a habit over the next 28 days to put your personal projects in better positions?
I didn’t build any habits in February that put me in a better position to work on my passion projects, but I absolutely made up for it in March in April. I fell back in love with meditation, journaling, and running. I also joined the #pelotontribe doing a mixture of strength, cycling, and boxing throughout the week. After a few years of intense training, it’s done my heart good to blast through workouts in the morning, evening, or whenever I can fit it in during the day.
It's also helped to make my mind clearer, providing a welcome respite from the daily Olympics of working at a startup and scaling a studio.
How are you showing up for yourself outside of the work you're doing?
I’m showing up for myself by showing up as myself. I tied my value to my work for a long time, so the last few years I’ve done everything I can to divorce my worth from the work I do and the outcomes I provide. This helps keep me balanced whether I’m brokering a million-dollar deal or losing out on one as equally lucrative. This mindset shift is helping to keep me balanced as to seek out things that are for my highest good.
Beginning this week, I’m bringing you twice-weekly drops of The Creative Brink podcast providing insights on my experience as a creator who has quietly scaled a studio from 0 to 7 figures in the last five years. I’m excited for you to experience this journey with me, so make sure to subscribe if you haven’t yet.
